Obituary for Donald Miller

Donald “Red” Miller went to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, May 22, 2023 after 98 wonderful years. A graveside service for Red will be held at the Masonic Cemetery in Clinton on Thursday, May 25, 2023 at 11:00 conducted by the Rev. Bruce Sides, Red’s son-in-law. Red was born to Otis and Manie Miller on February 24, 1925 in Mt. Herman, LA and graduated from Mt. Herman High School in 1941. He was a driven, hardworking, caring and compassionate man who loved his family and Jesus Christ. During World War II, he served his country at Camp Claiborne, where he oversaw the base store. After the end of the war and while passing through Hammond, LA, he met a wonderful woman, Norma, and married her. Red and Norma had a wonderful marriage of 68 years and raised two children, Sharyn and Rodney. Red balanced his duty of providing for his family with his entrepreneurial spirit. During his 30 year career in the logistics industry, he was always busy with some other venture on the side – from striping parking lots with his brother-in-law to his real passion, real estate. After retiring from his logistics career, he focused on real estate development and home building in Clinton, LA. He was not a fan of technology, so kept detailed, meticulous handwritten notes and budgets on yellow legal pads. He also served on the Clinton Planning Commission. In his free time, Red was a master vegetable gardener. His family and friends will miss the fresh tomatos, purple hull peas, corn, okra and other treats from Red’s gardens over the years. There is truly nothing better than a tomato sandwich using Red’s fresh tomatoes. Don and Norma were very active in multiple churches throughout the years and were charter members of Feliciana Baptist Church in Clinton where they worshipped for many years. They had many wonderful friends and special times at Feliciana Baptist. Red was also a member of the Masonic Lodge and The Shriners. He is survived by his children, Sharyn Miller Sides, husband Bruce L. Sides of Baton Rouge, LA and Rodney Donald Miller, wife Jamie Whitehead Miller of Clinton, LA., Grandchildren Brett Michael Sides of Baton Rouge, Darren Scott Sides of Tulsa, OK and Melissa Miller Shores of McComb, MS, as well as nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who will all greatly miss him. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Norma Bankston Miller, parents Otis A and Manie B Miller, brothers Burl Wesley Miller and Overton Miller, and sister Zulema Miller Seals. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Feliciana Baptist Church, P.O. Box 428, Clinton LA 70722 and MissionDignity.org. The family wishes to thank his loving and caring caregivers who made the last few months so peaceful for him.
