Obituary for John Campbell "J.C." Metz Sr.

We celebrate the well-lived, long life of John Campbell Metz, Sr., known to all as J. C., who passed peacefully at his home in St. Francisville, LA, on March 7, 2021, at the age of 96-1/2 years. Born on July 15, 1924, to Jesse and Myrtle Metz, J. C. grew up fishing, hunting, and playing in the backwoods of Cat Island Swamp with his seven siblings. He served in the U. S. Army and fought in World War II’s Pacific War. J. C. returned home in February 1946, with 5 medals, including the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with 1 Bronze star for service in the Northern Solomons Campaign, the Philippine Liberation Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. J. C. married Lily Imahara on November 16, 1951, and together they raised their family of seven children. His wife has said, `J. C. is the provider and protector for his family’, and he instilled in his children simple priorities for life: family and hard work. J. C. was a supervisor at Daniel and Truit Feed Mill in St. Francisville for many years, then became the Facilities Supervisor for the West Feliciana Parish School Board, all the while raising hogs and chickens, tending to several large gardens, and caring for his family. He retired from the School Board in June 1994. J. C. was the last survivor of the original Metz siblings, and he is survived by his wife, Lily, and their 7 children, Linda `Lucky’ Snyder, Joyce `Sister’ Roberts, Johnny and wife Tracy, Wanda `Dootsie’ and husband Don Chase, Randy and wife Melissa, Amy and husband Chris Hebert, Gaye `Gaye-baby’ and husband Ruben Toney, as well as his 7 grandchildren Justin, Sarah, Aaron, Mallory, Bailey, Taylor and Ethan, and 4 great-grandchildren Abby, John Carter, Laura and Charles. J. C. will be best remembered for his generous spirit, good cooking, and his favorite quote, `My family is my Life!’ An 11:00 am graveside service will be Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Grace Episcopal Church Cemetery, St. Francisville, LA, conducted by Reverend Joe Ratcliff and Reverend Joel Williams.
