June Jennette Derick was born on June 10th, 1940 to Lilly Lake and Isaac Mott, the 10th of 12 children. She grew up and then lived and worked in the Plaquemine area until she moved to Chicago where she met the love of her life, James Derick, Sr. They were married on October 18, 1959. In 1965 they returned to live in the Baton Rouge area and eventually operated two businesses, Derick’s Refrigeration and Baker Bible, Book and Gift. Ms. June had two children, Sandra Gail and James Milton Jr., who both preceded her in death. She is survived by her son-in-law, Tim Nelson of Memphis, Tennessee, two grandchildren, Staci Lewis of Clarksdale, Mississippi and Jared Nelson of Spokane Washington, three great grandchildren, Josiah, Nolan and Micah Lewis, all of Clarksdale and a niece, Leslie Kelley of Addis, Louisiana and numerous other nieces and nephews whom she dearly loved. Ms. June was a member of Life Tabernacle Church, where she had many close friends. She is remembered as a kind, generous and fun person who was always willing to lend a helping hand. Many people have expressed what she meant to them since her passing. Most of all Ms. June loved her family. Her house was often a gathering place for relatives and her door was always open to family members. But perhaps where her legacy will live the strongest is through her grandchildren. She was truly a “Momo” that loved, cared for, nurtured and overindulged her two precious grandchildren that she saw as gifts from God. Although all who knew her are grieving, we also can take comfort that she is with her Lord and Savior. She loved and served God and has passed on that legacy as well. The family would like to thank the staff at Landmark Nursing Home of Plaquemine and Life Source Hospice who provided her with such kind and empathetic care in an unprecedented time when family could not be there. The family will have a private service due to COVID precautions. A memorial service will be held for her later this year. In lieu of flowers the family asks that you donate to the Alzheimer's Association or charity of your choice.
