Obituary for William Delray "Delray" Babson
William Delray Babson, 86, of Zachary, died peacefully at his home on Thursday, February 4, 2021. He was born in Ashe, NC on August 14, 1934, the youngest son of Walter Raleigh and Amanda Caroline Phelps Babson. Delray married Hilda Morris Marks, his wife of 63 years on January 22, 1956 in Riegelwood, NC. In 1968 they moved to Zachary, LA where he was employed by Georgia Pacific Paper Corp. After retirement, Delray owned and operated Advanced Transmission. Later, he became a real estate agent with Ken Doss Reality and a marshal and starter at Beaver Creek Golf Course.
Delray was a loving and devoted brother, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was an avid sportsman known for his athleticism, who enjoyed and participated in golf, tennis, bowling, basketball, and weightlifting. He loved coaching youth baseball and football. He was also known for his jokes, jingles, rhymes, and stories that he created and presented to all who wanted to share a laugh or be entertained. In his later years, he enjoyed reading and spending time with his family.
Delray was a member of the Plains Presbyterian Church for almost 53 years, a Master Mason with Waccamaw Lodge of NC, and a member of Gideon International.
In addition to his parents, Delray was preceded in death by his his wife Hilda; his son, William Delray (Del) Babson Jr; two brothers, Hyton and Jervie Babson; and sister Luella Hilburn. He is survived by his daughter, Cheryl Babson Carter; son-in-law Wayne “Spider” Carter; one sister, Jean Sibilia; two granddaughters Clacey Arnold and husband Will Arnold; Kalyn Carter; four great-grandchildren: Kade, Carter, Cullyn Claire, and Camille Grace Arnold.
The family would like to express their sincere gratitude fo Bridgeway Hospice for their professional and compassionate care. Special appreciation and gratitude go to nurse Pam Stoewer and sitter Jenifer Packard who were truly blessings from God.
Visitation will be at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc. in Zachary on Saturday, February 6, 2021 from 10am until services at 11:00am. Pallbearers will be Wayne Carter, Will Arnold, David Mills, Nelson Perret, Charles Snyder, and Steve Jackson.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Plains Presbyterian Church or Gideons International.
