John Chapman “Chap” Levert Sanford passed peacefully on January 4th, 2021 at the age of 92 in his sleep surrounded by loved ones. Born to Octavia Marjorie Levert and Gaston George Edward Sanford on December 23, 1928 in Baton Rouge, La. He was raised in Cuba on a sugar cane plantation his father ran and returned to Baton Rouge to attend school. He graduated from University High School, LSU Law School in 1951 and served as a Captain in the United States Air Force. Upon his honorable discharge, he made his home in Baton Rouge where he practiced law and raised his family. Chapman was most passionate about his personal relationship with Jesus Christ, his children, grandchildren, family and education. He taught there is God’s law and man’s law and if we follow God’s law, we will be ok. When asked by anyone what was your favorite and most important job, without hesitation, Chap would respond being a father and raising my children. He loved all his family dearly, was a devoted husband, father, son and treasured his relationship with his brother, George. Passionate about education, he founded the first Montessori School in Baton Rouge and the Shedd School for dyslexic children. He taught his children fierce independence, the value of fundamental freedom and inspired a fighting spirit to seek the truth in all things and to settle for nothing less. Survived by his wife, Mary Anne Ostrowe Turner Sanford, his 5 Children, Jeffry Lamonte Sanford, Christopher Levert Sanford, Michael Dumontier Sanford (Starr), Alison Ellen Sanford Dazzio (Warren), Stephen Chapman Sanford (Courtney) and his beloved grandchildren, Marjorie, Leon and Joseph Sanford, Michael Mac, Christian and Alexandra Sanford, Anna Katherine, Elizabeth and Caroline Dazzio, Mary Grant, Audrey, William, and Amelia Sanford. He is preceded in death by his brother, George Edward Sanford and his daughter, Natasha Marie Sanford Dupuy (Charlie). The Sanford Family would like to thank Chapman’s physicians, nurses and caretakers who have been a constant and invaluable source of support.A private graveside service will be held at Our Lady of Mt Carmel Catholic Church Cemetery.
