Obituary for Royce Clarence Hempel

Royce Clarence Hempel, "Doc", "Chief", 82, passed away on Friday, July 20, 2018 in Baton Rouge. He was a resident of Zachary, LA and born in Warda, TX. He was retired from the US Navy with 24 years of service and Georgia Pacific with 18 years of service.
Visitation will be at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc., Zachary on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm and on Wednesday, July 25, 2018 from 9:00 am until service time at 10:00 am conducted by Commander Harry Brady. Interment will follow in LA National Cemetery, Zachary.
Royce is survived by his wife of 56 years, Betty C. Hempel, daughters, Lisa H. Ganey(Stephen) of Houston, TX, Cheryl H. Biggers (Lewis) of Annapolis, MD, Son, Ronald A. Hempel of Melbourne, FL, sisters, Ruth Ziehr of Pearland, TX and Bernice Edgett (Norman) of Plainville, KS, brothers, August Hempel, Jr. (Violet) and Alfred Hempel (Joydell), all of Victoria, TX, his grandchildren, Mitchel Ganey, Morgan Ganey, Meghan Ganey, Samuel Hempel, Nicholas Hempel, Andrew Biggers and Jack Biggers.
Royce is preceded in death by his parents, August and Lydia, brothers, Oscar and Edward, sister in law, Nelda and brother in law, Alvin Ziehr.
Royce was a proud member of the US Navy serving in the Vietnam war. He received the Navy Commendation Purple Heart among many other honors. He was a member of the Military Order Purple Heart, USA;, member of Veterans of Foreign War, Fleet Reserve Association, member of Veterans Park Association of Zachary. Royce was instrumental in acquiring land for the new part of Port Hudson National Cemetery from Georgia Pacific.
