Obituary for Silas "Pop" Breland

Great-grandfather, grandfather, father, uncle and Pop to many, Silas Breland at age 79, went home to our Heavenly Father Thursday, December 21 at 10:30 p.m. He was a resident of Mercedes, TX and a former resident of Zachary, LA.

Pop's spirit beat cancer, but his body succumbed to the sickness after a nine year resilient effort. His faith, attitude and hundreds if not thousands of a support system, encouraged his victory.

In 1989 after 28 years with the Boilermakers Local 582 of Baton Rouge, Pop retired. Pop's work ethic in less-than-favorable conditions and with equal support of wife for 34 years, Norma Foster Breland, provided for their four children.

Visitation will be at Charlet Funeral Home Tuesday, December 26 from 5:00 - 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday, December 27 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. with the service immediately following at 11:00 a.m.. Burial service will be at Hillcrest Cemetery on Groom Road in Baker.

Pop is survived by three daughters: Terri Breland Johnson, Tammi Breland Barksdale and Tonya Breland Crawford, and one son, Todd Breland; ten grandchildren: Kayla Willcutt, Jared Johnson, Jenifer Johnson, Jill Johnson, Jacob Barksdale, Tyler Barksdale, Blake Barksdale, Dayton Crawford, Bryce Breland and Austin Breland; three great-grandchildren: Nalana Coates, Collin Coates and Kayden Willcutt; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He is preceded in death by former wife, Norma Foster Breland, brother Paul Breland, sister Athalone Breland Edwards, sister Joyce Breland Westmoreland, brother Talmadge Breland, Jr., sister Mary Breland Smith, parents Talmadge Breland, Sr. and Canalious "Jack" Johnson Breland and granddaughter Amanda Johnson.

The funeral service will be conducted by nephew Randy Foster. Pallbearers will be nephews Kenny Breland and Danny Foster, grandsons Jacob Barksdale, Tyler Barksdale, Blake Barksdale and Dayton Crawford.
