Obituary for Herbert Gosa "Herb" Hicks

Herbert Gosa "Herb" Hicks
Herbert "Herb" Gosa Hicks. Born December 17, 1932, Herb slipped gently into the arms of Jesus, January 6, 2018 at the age of 85. He was greatly loved by all for his silly wit that belied his deep thinking and for his gentle Southern charm. He will be greatly missed here and greatly welcomed in Heaven! Born in Tuscaloosa Alabama and lived in Eutaw, Alabama until graduating in 1950 from Greene County High School. Captain Hicks served in the Air Force and the Air Force reserves and was stationed in Fairbanks Alaska during the Cold War era. He earned his private pilot's license while serving, and enjoyed sharing his love of flying with his children and grandchildren. Herb earned a Bachelors degree in civil engineering from Georgia Tech University in 1954, an MBA from the University of Alabama in 1958 and a Ph.D. in business management from the University of Alabama in 1960. Dr. Hicks had an illustrious career as a professor of management for 18 years at Louisiana State University. During this time he authored and co-authored over 20 textbooks. He also served as the National President of the Academy of Management from 1974 through 1975. Herb and his wife Jane spent time camping in their pop up trailer in their youth with their young family. In later years, they enjoyed traveling to Europe for several extended vacations. Herb also loved the Colorado Rockies and took great pleasure in bringing his kids and grandkids with him for summer and winter adventures in the mountains. Herb was a faithful Christian and a longtime member of Trinity Episcopal Church and then the Church of the Holy Spirit during his 33 years in Baton Rouge. After retiring, he and Jane moved to Magnolia Springs, Alabama where he was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Herb had a beautiful tenor voice and shared his gift by singing in the church choir throughout his whole life. In fact, he met his sweetheart at a wedding when he had been hired as the featured singer. Herb began his Alzheimer's journey about 10 years ago. He spent the last five years living live well indeed, at St. James Place retirement community in Baton Rouge. He loved to lead singing and read poetry to his neighbors there. Even when he had trouble speaking, he could still remember all of the lyrics to many songs and sing them with gusto! Herb is preceded in death by his loving wife of 53 years Jane Haywood French Hicks, his father Victor Carl Hicks, his mother Annie Gosa Hicks, his brother Victor Carl Hicks, his infant sister Elenor Jane Hicks and sisters Margaret Melissa Cross, Bobby Grace Ingram, Dorothy Claire Winston, and Juanita Jean Williams. Herb is survived by his son Carl Hicks and his wife Susan DeRossett Hicks, daughter Caren Elaine Hicks Pourciau and husband Dusty Lane Pourciau, grandsons Cole Pourciau, Grant Pourciau and his wife Morgan Williams Pourciau, Jordan Carl Hicks and his wife Danielle Demers Hicks, Justin Kyle Hicks and his wife Monica Melendez Hicks, granddaughter Jana Brooke Hicks Davilla and her husband Abisay Davilla, and two great granddaughters Lillian Marie Hicks and Adelyn Rae Pourciau.

Visitation will be Friday, January 12 from 5 PM until 8 PM at Charlet Funeral Home, Zachary. The funeral will take place Saturday, January 13, 2018 at 10 AM also at Charlet Funeral Home in Zachary. The Reverends Shane Pourciau and Dr. Les Colvin will officiate. Pallbearers are Carl, Jordan and Justin Hicks and Dusty, Cole and Grant Pourciau. Burial immediately following the service at Greenoaks Memorial Park, Baton Rouge. Memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Association at ALZ.Org.
