Obituary for Berniece Kirkland Hughes

Berniece Hughes was a native of Oak Grove, Louisiana and a resident of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She later retired to West Feliciana Parish. She passed away peacefully on July 4, 2017 at the age of 88. She was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who will be greatly missed. She and her husband, Dempsey, were instrumental in starting the Deep South Stock Horse Show Association which continues today. They were also very active in the Greenwell Springs Youth Riders Association. Her love for horses was passed on to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is a member of the First Baptist Church of St. Francisville.
Berniece is survived by her children, a son, Jack Hughes and his wife, Leigh, a daughter, Sherry Custis and her husband, Patrick, her grandchildren: Kelly Hughes, Kyle Harris and his wife, Allyson, Craig Harris and his wife, Sarah, and Jennifer Quinn and her husband Lee as well as five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dempsey Hughes, her parents Randall Henry Kirkland and Eureka Jones Kirkland and sisters, Dell Kirkland and Grace Kirkland. We would like to extend a special thanks to her caregivers, Peggy Morris and Debbie Darden for the wonderful care and all the love they showed to her.
Visitation will be on July 7, 2017 at the First Baptist Church in St. Francisville from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at which time the service will be conducted by Brothers Ratcliff, Williams and Cheatham.
