I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth.
Murray Buie Hall, “Poppie” to so many, pitched his tent, set up camp and placed his chair by the river within the Pearly Gates of our Lord on January 31, 2017. He was 80 years old.
He leaves his wife of 57 years, Linda Deming Hall (Nannie) and children, Susan Hall Harrison and husband Bret Harrison, Laura Hall Beasley and husband Lt. Colonel Dale Beasley Jr., grandchildren: Heather Jordan Harrison, Jackson Alden Elliott, Kathryn Alyssa Elliott, Lauren Anne Elliott and his "new" grandson Midshipman Wes Beasley and granddaughter Joan Claire Beasley to carry on in his stead. Murray was the son of the late Versie Lafayette Hall and Lula Mae Buie Hall.
An avid lover of history, Poppie introduced his children to many a historic site and battlefield across the country. Fond memories of riding cannon as children come to mind. Later in life, Poppie and Nannie joined the 7th Louisiana Civil War reenactment group that became his family for over 25 years. It was during that time he grew his signature mustache furthering the authenticity of his role as a soldier reenacting various battles and later became the beloved patriarch of the group. As he aged, he continued his passion of history by being involved in Living History demonstrations to different schools and events to further the education of young and old alike.
Poppie was a stoic man, a man of few words unless you got him talking about his passions: weaponry, history and star gazing. He was a man that was always listening, taking it all in while chuckling under his breath.
He served in the United States Army as a medic stationed in Orleans, France from 1960-1962 and furthered his passion of history by traipsing the European countryside with a buddy and a stripped out Volkswagen full of containers of gas.
He was a long time member of Weller Avenue Baptist Church and then later Galilee Baptist Church serving as a deacon at both. He was retiree of Copolymer Rubber Corporation (now Lion).
Visitation will be held Saturday, February 4, 2017 from 9:00 am until service at 11:00 am at Charlet Funeral Home, Inc., Zachary. Burial to follow at Galilee Baptist Church Cemetery, Zachary.
In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Camp Moore located in Kentwood, Louisiana - www.campmoorela.com or the Baptist Children's Home - www.lbch.org.
We would like to thank the entire staff at AMG Hospital for their caliant efforts in taking care of Poppie.
Poppie will be sorely missed, but we know that he is leaned back in his chair by his tent, donning his favorite hat, feet propped up, smoking his pipe observing it all, chuckling to himself while waiting for all the rest of us to join him. We see you smiling Poppie.
